15-year-old Melanie Nadia Ethier disappeared on September 29, 1996 after leaving a friend’s house to walk home. She has not been seen since.
About the Case
In 1996, Melanie Nadia Ethier, 15, resided in New Liskeard, Ontario with her mother and five-year-old sister. On the night of Saturday, September 28th, Melanie left her residence around 10:00 p.m. to go watch movies at a friend’s house on Pine Street East, a few blocks away. She left the friend’s residence around 2:00 a.m. to walk back home. The walk should have taken her only about 10 minutes, but Melanie never made it home and has not been seen since.
Melanie was wearing a green Nike jacket, blue jeans, a white T-shirt and black boots at the time of her disappearance.
Melanie’s mother, Celine Ethier awoke to Melanie’s alarm clock going off at 6:00 a.m. on September 29th. Melanie was supposed to work at a local daycare that day. When Celine went to Melanie’s room, the teen was not in her bed, so Celine assumed she was still at her friend’s house. When Celine learned that Melanie had left at 2:00 a.m., she reported her daughter missing to New Liskeard Police Service.
New Liskeard police received witness information indicating Melanie made it as far as the bridge that crosses the Wabi River, within several hundred yards of her home.
Other tips came in but a search for the teen turned up nothing.
While evidence was collected in the case, police remain quiet about what that evidence was for fear of jeopardizing the investigation.
Police say the case is open and active today. Foul play is strongly suspected.
Celine put up a billboard to help find Melanie.
There is a Facebook group for Melanie Nadia Ethier, too.
True Crime Diva’s Thoughts
There is not a lot of info on this one, but I wanted to write about it after seeing Melanie’s picture. She was a beautiful young girl who deserves justice.
The walk home was only 10 minutes but, at 2 a.m. it’s hard telling who was out and about at that time. I’d like to know who the witnesses were who saw her at the bridge. How many people would be out and about in this community at 2:00 a.m.? I think this was just a wrong-place-at-the-wrong time scenario. Someone took advantage of a young girl walking alone at night.
From what I understand, this is a small community so the chances are good that Melanie knew her killer. Rumors as to what happened to Melanie have been mentioned over the years, one involving a wood chipper. That one seems to be the most spread rumor, so you have to wonder if there is any truth in it. No body would be found, that’s for sure.
As far as the investigation goes, I can understand the cops being hush-hush on a newer case, but one that’s over 2 decades old? Maybe if they released something, it would help somehow.
