Stine left home on July 15, 2016, in the middle of the night without her mother’s permission, which was uncharacteristic of the teenager. She was last seen on CCTV cameras at 2:30 a.m. crossing the intersection at East Montview Boulevard and Peoria Street alone. No one has seen her since.

Tristen Alan Myers, 4, walked out of his North Carolina home in October 2000 with two family dogs and vanished. The dogs returned several days later without him. The police launched an extensive search but never found any sign of Tristen. A boy resembling Tristen appeared in an Illinois hospital three years later, but DNA tests proved he was not the missing child.

Sarah Benford, 14, was last seen on April 6, 2000, in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England, after fleeing a children’s home in Northampton three days before. She had visited her mother at work; they argued, and Sarah left. Her mother never saw her again. Undoubtedly, many people failed Sarah, including social services and the police, who ignored signs that she was a victim of sexual exploitation.

Robert Thomas Pillsen-Rahier, 15, vanished from the Cheyenne Mesa Adolescent Treatment Facility in Colorado Springs on July 6, 1990. During his final phone call with his mother, he said he had something to tell her but did not want to speak over the phone; the facility monitored phone calls. His mother planned to visit her son to discuss the matter, but he disappeared before she could. She has reason to believe someone at the facility had sexually abused him.

Jessica Ann Kinsey, 14, disappeared from Union, Missouri on Dec. 26, 1995, after leaving a friend’s house with Jimmy Hopkins, 23. The investigation led detectives to an Indiana motel, a Tennessee pawn shop, and a yogurt shop in California but provided few clues to Jessica’s whereabouts. In 2008, Hopkins killed his second wife before turning the gun on himself.
