The Suspicious Death of Alfred Wright

When I hear the town name Jasper, and it just happens to be in Texas, I immediately think of James Byrd, Jr. I’m sure you do, too. On June 7, 1998, one of the worst cases of racial crimes occurred here. James Byrd, Jr. age 48, was dragged for three miles behind a pick-up truck on an asphalt road. He remained conscious throughout most of the terrifying ordeal and was killed when his body hit the edge of a culvert, severing his head and right arm. The murderers – Shawn Berry, Lawrence Russell Brewer, and John King – then drove on for another mile before dumping his torso in front of an African-American cemetary. Martin Allen: Vanished Without a Trace in 1979

I came across this case in October. It was the case that made me want to write in this blog again. I can’t explain it, but I felt drawn to this boy. Maybe because we are close in age. Or maybe for the sheer fact that he was robbed of many things, including the rest of his childhood, his family, and a future family of his own. Whatever it is, I couldn’t keep my mind off of him or the case. read more
